CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Emil Fredrik Västerström
AGE: 19
CANON: Stand Still, Stay Silent

CANON HISTORY:
In the year 0, a boat carrying individuals inflicted with a mysterious disease washed up on Spanish shores. While trying to study the disease, Iceland closed its borders and eventually so did the rest of the nordic countries. The disease quickly became an epidemic that wiped out most of the population, with Iceland carrying 75% of the world's population, with its own population of 200,000. The remainder of the nordic countries are generally populated around the coasts, as any other land uncleansed of creatures called trolls is considered dangerous and labeled as The Silent World.

Emil was born in year 71 in Östersund, Sweden to a previously wealthy family. His family was able to afford private tutoring for him in his youth, so he was able to forgo the Icelandic lessons mandatory for all academics. Having been a boy spoiled by riches, he adjusted badly when he had to be sent to public education. He was disliked by his instructors, and decided to enlist in the military to become a cleanser, a special designated role of someone who goes to the Silent World to kill the trolls that reside there.

He is recruited to an expedition by his aunt and uncle Siv and Torbjörn, and go with them to Björkörfjärden Train Station in order to meet up with some other recruits. He puts a great deal of effort into making a good impression, but falls asleep and has something spilled on him from someone else, giving him no time to clean up before meeting his new crewmates.

Before they depart, Emil's weapons are confiscated since he lacks the proper license. Then they board the train to Öresundbro in order to meet up with the remaining crew members. During the night, there's an attack on the train by a troll classified as a Giant, and Emil comes out of bed to see what's going on but the train crew attempts to usher him away. The Giant is killed by a tunnel, but asks Emil for help before it does, which causes him to freak out and punch it.

They meet with Sigrun and Mikkel, the remainder of their crew, and begin their expedition outside Copenhagen in Kastrup. They enter what used to be a public library, and try to recover some books. While they're successful in this endeavor, a troll shows up above Emil and he fights it off with his lantern. However, a second one shows up and he needs to be rescued by Sigrun, who discovers they've awoken a troll nest. Emil sets fire to the building as the crew escapes, but tries to run back in for Lalli who is nowhere to be found. Lalli, however, jumps out of the window just in time for the crew to make their escape.

While at Kastrup fort, they inspect the books and decide that they are probably not going to get any buyers, and Emil waits for breakfast as the others decide where to venture next.

Emil and Sigrun then break off from the group to investigate a school, where Emil raises concern that it might be a troll nest, to which Sigrun responds that the school is too flimsy a building for trolls to want to live there. He also sees a deer and raises a gun to shoot it, but Sigrun comments that it’s not affected by the illness. He hears something outside and goes to investigate what turns out to be an affected dog cornering a cat. He shoots the dog and it transforms into a troll and chases him, but stalks off leaving him returning to find Sigrun trying to coax the cat off a pole. It dies, but they rescue one of the cat’s kittens. Later, the dog returns and Emil kills it for good after burying the mother cat.

Following that, they go out to scout a hospital and return to have dinner. Reynir warns a few of the crew that they need to leave, but he’s not taken seriously as no one believes he’s a mage. A troll then comes and the fighters of the crew have to chase it to leave it stuck stranded somewhere.

The crew move along, and Lalli becomes upset upon waking from a dream where he understands everyone. He reacts badly to Emil offering him breakfast, and upon discovering the issue, Emil begins to learn Finnish, though badly. Emil questions if magic is real, and then the crew is attacked by a large spirit that has been stalking them. They ward it off, but the spirit resolves to come back stronger. In the meantime, Reynir believes this to be a real threat and needs to consult a pastor woman that he met in the mage world. He perceives Lalli's lack of assistance as an annoyance and shakes him. Emil responds to this by punching Reynir in the face,
an act that seemed to confuse even him.

CANON PERSONALITY:
Emil is loud and boisterous, often arrogant and boastful. He proves to have very strong opinions, like when he speaks about other nations and their stereotypes, despite having not met anyone from those nations, and he runs his mouth quite often. He is overconfident in his actions, almost cocky, even though he is unqualified for his position and he had never come face to face with a troll before signing up for the expedition. Despite admitting this, he suggests that he is ready and willing to face the challenges ahead.

It was suggested that he was a braggart in his youth and he did not get along with his public school teachers, possibly because he was not a good student. His grades dropped as did his self-confidence, and he decided to join the military. This was in direct response to no longer wishing to pursue a career as an academic. This would suggest that he cares about others' opinions and that he has a somewhat fragile ego. However, being both stubborn and ambitious, he vows to attain success, which would be the best revenge.

Though he is well-educated, the other characters remark that he is not very smart, and he also doesn't seem to care about the pursuit of knowledge. He is, however, proud of his academic background, even though that may be more tied to propriety and status rather than a passion for wisdom.

He is not particularly brave, preferring to sit out investigations of monsters when possible, and needing to be roped into some arduous tasks by his crewmates. Sometimes he complains of injuries in order to weasel his way out of having to do things, though other characters will tell him to "quit being a baby." He's a little bit whiny, remarking when breakfast is late and when the food's not good, thought he knows they have very limited resources.

He is also materialistic, as he used to be wealthy, and this is the reason why he’s chosen to go on this mission and aid in finding books, which he otherwise finds worthless. He only becomes interested in retrieving them once he is told how much they might sell for on the market. Emil cares a lot about image in this way, as he also worries about his appearance constantly. He asks to be woken up early in order to preen, he worries about making a good first impression, he overreacts upon getting his face bruised, and he is constantly pictured fixing his hair. He is pretty entitled and demonstrates an unwillingness to give up certain aspects of the lifestyle he led when his family had more money.

Emil can also be extremely self-absorbed. When the others speak in a way he doesn't understand, his initial response is to ask whether they are speaking about him. He also becomes offended when he misunderstands Danish, and mistakenly believes that Mikkel calls him ugly. When upset, he is also comforted by another character by that character helping Emil make his hair shiny.

Sometimes Emil panics, causing him to overreact to certain situations. His role in the military was as a cleanser, so his specialties mostly involve blowing things up. It seems that he’s happy to go in “guns blazing” and is admonished by the other characters for setting a library on fire. He’s a bit clumsy and oafish in this way, sometimes described as being hamfisted. He also once tried to cast a line to fish and ended up hooking his own shirt.

Emil seems to have a high regard for life, becoming upset with Mikkel for putting down a cat, burying it, comforting a beast he needs to kill, and promising to bury it as well. He becomes emotional upon confronting the deaths of both the beast and the cat. Even though he is visibly shaken by these events, he speaks in a standoffish manner and acts as if he's fine.

Though he has a rough exterior, Emil cares about his friends and he’s particularly protective of Lalli. Even though Lalli is a mage, Emil doesn’t believe in magic, and there’s a language barrier, he still considers them close and becomes concerned when Lalli is upset with him. And even though Lalli throws food in his face, he doesn't get mad. Instead, he seeks counsel from Tuuri to help repair his relationship. He (assumed, as it's offscreen) helps Lalli to learn Swedish when he discovers that he's upset over being unable to communicate with the crew if not through Tuuri. Emil even attempts to learn Finnish, and uses it to encourage Lalli, signifying an underlying caring nature.

He has a decent rapport with the remaining crew, and Sigrun even considers him a bit like a lieutenant, and places her trust in him. Perhaps because she's so capable or because he's easily subject to flattery, he takes to her quite a bit and is more polite to her than he is with some of the other crew.

He is pictured making jokes with the other characters, being generally sociable, kind, and friendly. He also has good relationships with his extended family, as he was recommended for this trip by his aunt and uncle; he also seems particularly beloved by his three little cousins.

Even though he can be a little bit cowardly, he is both curious and loyal, and will break rules and risk his safety for his friends. He has been seen using himself as a human shield for other characters in the face of danger and who Emil perceives to be less physically strong.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
-Military training
-Demolitions and arson expert.
-Can wield a variety of weapons.
-Can speak extremely terrible beginner's Finnish.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Emil Fredrik Västerström
AU AGE: 19
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: N/A

AU HISTORY:
Emil was born to a middle-class/upper-middle-class family from Östersund, Sweden, but early in his childhood they relocated to Stockholm. He had a really good but unremarkable childhood, doing decently in school and having a good social life, but remained unsure about what to do with his future. He only knew that he wasn't sure he was ready to settle down in Stockholm and take "real" jobs like his parents just yet, or even if he was ready to move into university.

After a little bit of research (read: no research), he attained a romanticized idea of the American dream. Having come from someplace so established, Emil believed that there was a holdover of the American "frontiersman" attitude. Quickly drawn in by it, he decided to move to Recollé to see if he could find his place and what he wanted to do with his life!

Mistakenly, he believed that it would be easy and relatively cheap to emigrate to, find work in, and then apply to study in America. Upon arriving in America at the age of 18, he had a rude awakening that his English wasn't even as good as he'd imagined it to be. So he struggled for a bit during his first few months, unable to find work as people were reluctant to hire him, living off of his friends' couches, of savings, and finally of having to call his parents to wire him some cash.

He finally found work as a receptionist for a spa, and swallowed his pride upon seeing the paltry actual take-home sum of his paycheck. His parents gave him generous gifts for Christmas and his 19th, but it just resulted in him feeling bad about himself and resolving not to return home until he Made It in America, whatever Made It means. Quickly upon obtaining a job as a receptionist, he also signed up for massage training, and became a licensed massage therapist. It's his current day job, but he doesn't want to do it forever.

In his free time, he decided to do odd jobs and take up tutoring kids in subjects he had studied, which also helped to improve his English skills (though he still has a rather thick accent.) He was able to pay back his friends, move into his own place/a place with roommates, and work on getting scholarships. He had set aside a year to make up enough money in order to do his studies, but now is planning for it to take a lot longer. He also tries out a lot of hobbies as quick ways to make cash,
and maybe figure out where his real passions are. He will do pretty much any odd job for enough cash, or enough beer.

Emil is trying really hard to be independent, and he's proud of the small successes he's been able to make. He's busy all the time, and a little tired, but he thinks it's been worth the experience so far. And he still calls home at least once a week!

Also, the spa is in Enprise and it's named "Relataxations," as they also offer tax services from January through April. Emil will not be filing taxes.

AU PERSONALITY:
Emil can't stop comparing America to Sweden. He does not like Scandinavian winters, but he misses Scandinavian summers and complains about it anytime it starts to get a little warm. He has a general opinion that Americans are impolite and loud, but also friendly and hospitable. He hates the healthcare and prison system. He thinks everything is too expensive, except the clothes and food.

Emil likes books a little more, as he doesn't spurn them in the AU in pursuit of a military career. Rather, he makes academics one of his goals, so he probably spends some time at the library falling asleep into textbooks with his I'll-show-them attitude.

Instead of having the teachers as an antagonistic motivation, his biggest antagonist is himself. He makes unrealistic goals and then stubbornly tries his hardest to live up to them. Because he was never mocked by his mentors and peers, he doesn't have quite as big of a chip on his shoulder over his own ability and competency.

Though still clumsy, he has a much better humor about it. He also laughs at himself more easily in general and is a bit more goofy and lighthearted. Because his family hasn't fallen on hard times, he finds it less of an onus for him to represent the Västerströms well, and all the responsibility that he shoulders is self-inflicted.

Because he's also able to call his parents, as opposed to going places with just a possibly-spotty radio connection, he does call often, and is able to ask them for advice. This puts him in a slightly better mental space and equips him to better deal with life's little curveballs.
